  • Arrive in Haines and travel by expedition bus to a location where seasonal wildlife viewing is the best. Explore 6 wildlife habitats: ocean, estuary, river, lake, old growth forest and muskeg.

  • Use binoculars and powerful spotting scopes (photos can be taken through the scopes), as guides search for and identify: mountain goats in alpine meadows, bears along the river, seals, bald eagles, shore birds and waterfowl. This is a great opportunity to photograph the stunning scenery and wildlife in their natural habitat. Historic photos of Tlingit villages are available to compare the current landscape to how it appeared 100 years ago.

  • Stop by a fish weir, used to count, measure and weigh salmon during the spawning season. On the shore of a picturesque lake, experience the living tapestry beneath towering hemlock and spruce trees on a nature walk through an ancient muskeg. Learn the relationships between species, their edible or medicinal uses and identify the carnivorous plants along the trail.   • Arrive in Haines and travel by expedition bus to the sheltered Chilkoot River Valley, for centuries the favorite fishing site for the Tlingit People and also for brown bears.

  • As you enter the watershed, be on the lookout for brown bear descending on the river, leaving the cover of the forest to fish along the grassy banks. From the protection of your bus, witness the food chain in action as thousands of salmon swim past the hungry bruins splashing and feeding in the water.

  • Meet your guide and board a ferry boat for a 45-minute scenic cruise to the town of Haines. Enjoy panoramic wilderness views as you glide along Lynn Canal, the longest and deepest fjord in North America, where the mountains rise straight up from the ocean at heights of 6,000 feet. Be sure to keep an eye out for the marine wildlife that call these waters home.

  • Arrive at Haines, known as the hidden jewel of Alaska, to board your motorcoach for a narrated 45-minute drive along the Chilkat River on the Haines Scenic Byway.

  • Disembark at the jet boat facility to board a flat-bottom river boat. The 24-passenger boat is powered by jet motors and is specially designed to traverse the shallow and narrow braided channels of the Chilkat River.

  • Take an approximate 25-minute narrated van tour to the summit of the White Pass. Your experienced guides will tell you about the rush of 1898 and the unique geology and ecology of this rich area. You will travel from the temperate forest through the coastal mountains to the alpine!

  • Hop on a bicycle and coast downhill from the summit to the sea! You will be escorted for a 15-mile coast on a paved road back to Skagway. You will make frequent stops on this approximately 1.5 hour ride for photos of glacier fed waterfalls, stunning mountain landscapes, and important historical markers on the White Pass Trail. At times, wildlife is also spotted along the road! Note: Guests must be at least 4'6" tall and comfortable riding a bicycle downhill using the brake system.
