  • Board a bus for the one-hour and 45-minute drive to San Luis Park.

  • Begin your 90-minute adventure with a short downhill walk that leads into an open hummingbird garden. Observe many species of the tiny, lively and colorful birds gathering. They will amaze you with their spectacular, aerial maneuvers.

  • Walk to the first of 4 suspended bridges stretching over a half-mile above the ground. Enjoy the most amazing bird’s eye view of the cloud forest. Each bridge stretches 95-253 feet long and as much as 126 feet above the ground.

  • Continue through rivers and cascades treated to spectacular vistas while the naturalist guide points out the several species of birds, butterflies and small mammals that inhabit the misty area. Take the opportunity to observe lovely plants such as orchids, heliconia, ferns, bromeliads and other aerial species.

  • Visit a nearby butterfly farm encountering such butterfly species as the blue morpho, caligo and monarch.

  • After finishing the walk, you’ll have 60 minutes to taste a delicious ‘agua dulce’ (a traditional drink) with a typical hearty Costa Rican lunch.

  • On the return drive, take a 25-minute stop at El Jardin to browse the souvenir shop or admire the spectacular garden.

  • Arrive at the park, where you will have 90 minutes to experience the area, starting at a footpath specially designed to make an easy walk into the forest. The Carara National Park features animal sculptures and 3-dimensional maps, as well as resting areas, information booths and Braille signs. The park is also home to over 110 species of birds, including the endangered scarlet macaw, as well as anhinga “water turkeys,” surgeon ducks, pied-billed grebes, yellow-billed cotingas, laughing falcons and 3 different species of herons. You may also encounter several species of monkeys, reptiles and amphibians.

  • Ride your bike on a flat paved road to the intersection of Baja Mar, enjoying beautiful landscapes surrounded by cattle ranches and a small wetland area, where you may see water birds such as egrets and herons. At the end of the paved road, pedal a little harder and ride a short distance uphill to a gravel road. At this intersection, you’ll experience rolling hills and a moderate downhill until crossing the Baja Mar Lagoon.

  • Board the boat and set off on a 90-minute scenic river adventure. The protected Guacalillo Estuary is noted for its mangroves. These woody plants grow along tropical coastlines, and 4 different species grow here-tea, black, red and white.

  • See crocodiles, mammals and some of the 250 species of birds that call the mouth of the Tárcoles River their home. The area is considered by birdwatchers to be one of the richest sites for sea birds and shorebirds, specifically during the migration months from October through April. Ospreys, gulls, cormorants, pelicans and frigate birds are among the most common species in the delta. The mangrove forest also acts as one of the most important habitats of the endangered scarlet macaw as well as many other endemic birds, including the cuckoo, mangrove hummingbird, vireo, Panama flycatcher, herons and egrets.

  • Then take a short walk through the ranch's forest to the base of the canopy tour. This 2-hour adventure full of adrenaline consists of 11 horizontal traverses, with distances from 99 feet to 1155 feet long. It has 7 platforms and 6 decks.

  • Since the property lies next to the great Tárcoles River, wildlife sightings are common here. You may see and hear the scarlet macaws, howler monkeys, white tail deer and several varieties of aquatic birds. The area is also home to a variety of endangered tree species, such as mahogany, which are protected at the park.

  • After your exhilarating adventure soaring over the forest, recharge with some ice-cold water. Then reboard your transportation and head back to the pier.

Costa Rica’s mangroves are teeming with exotic birds such as ospreys, gulls, cormorants, pelicans and frigate birds. The shores are home to one of the largest colonies of crocodiles. Some of these reptiles are easily 10-feet long. Iguanas, Jesus Christ lizards as well as many birds like herons, egrets, ducks, spoon bills and storks are easily seen looking for food along the river shore.
