Once at the newly opened Mayapan site which is just as historically important as the better known Chichén Itzá and is much less crowded and considerably easier to reach.
This walled city was created by an alliance of Mayan families (including the Itzaes from Chichén Itzá) who banded together when they heard that the Spaniards had arrived in Mexico and would soon spread to the Yucatan. Within the walls were about 40 cenotes and almost 12,000 inhabitants who built the same structural designs found at Uxmal and Chichén Itzá, but on a smaller scale. Now, it is considered the last great Maya Capital. Similar to Chichén Itzá, there are more than 4,000 architectural structures to explore, including some colored wall murals that have survived to this day.

Uxmal is considered one of the most beautiful cities of the Mayan world and is famous for its magnificent carved facades, terraces, gracious plazas and imposing pyramids. Encompassing 150 acres, Uxmal was founded in 500 A.D. as a political hub and housed some 25,000 residents until its abandonment in the 1550s. As you walk alongside your informative guide, admire the site’s Puuc architecture and learn about the astronomical significance of its layout.
Spend 3.5 hours at the ruins where you will view elaborately carved facades at the Nunnery Quadrangle, named due to its similarities to a Spanish convent. See the ball court constructed for playing the Mesoamerica ballgame and the long mosaic edifices of the Governor’s Palace. The House of the Turtles is aptly named for its frieze of small turtles lining the building. Uxmal’s tallest structure, the massive Pyramid off the Magician, is a sight to behold.
