Enjoy a narrated tour through Hilo on your way to a stop at Rainbow Falls, an 80-foot high waterfall that gained its name from the rainbows seen in the mist of the falls on sunny afternoons.
Next, enjoy free time to explore the historical town of Hilo, featuring centuries-old wooden storefronts and a variety of shops, restaurants, galleries and cultural sites. Be sure to venture into the colorful Farmer's Market. Here you will find locally produced items including coffee, chocolate and exotic tropical fruits, as well as many Hawaiian handicrafts.
Make a stop at Pana'ewa Rainforest Zoo, the only naturally occurring tropical zoo in the United States. Enjoy an hour to explore over 80 animal species and the beautiful grounds featuring orchids, bamboos, palms and a water garden. Take a seat and enjoy a boxed lunch on the grounds of this tropical paradise.
No visit to the 'Big Island' would be complete without a stop to the Big Island Candies Store. Here, you will be able view the creative process of candy making in person, and stock up on world famous handmade Hawaiian treats before returning to your ship.

Board your van and take a short transfer to the Pana'ewa Zoo and Gardens.
Situated on 12 acres in the Pana‘ewa Forest, the zoo receives approximately 125 inches of rain a year and currently houses almost 200 animals. Enjoy approx. an hour to explore the zoo.
Next reboard your van and travel to the picturesque Punalu’u Black Sand Beach. Lined with swaying coconut palm trees, this is one of the best black sand beaches on the island. Stroll along the beach and look for honu (Green Hawaiian Sea Turtles) feeding just offshore or sun-worshipping on the sand. Here you will enjoy lunch which is included in the tour.
Your journey then takes you on a drive along the historic waterfront before arriving at Boiling Pots. Impressive photo opportunities are often found here when the river “boils” through depressions in the rocks.
Continue following the Wailuku River to Rainbow Falls. This iconic waterfall features an 80-foot-tall twin waterfall system. Look for the rainbow effect that gives the waterfall its name.

See The Valley of the Kings, a place of impossibly steep cliffs carved by plunging waterfalls cascading more than a thousand feet to the valley floor below.
Descend into Laupahoehoe Point where Laupahoehoe village was located. The 1946 tsunami forced the town to move to higher ground after the destruction left behind. Look for the monument erected in the names of those who lost their lives here.

Afterward you complete your hike, return to your van and head for photos at magnificent Rainbow Falls, which is named for the rainbows that often form in the surrounding mist.

Your Junior Ranger experience will also expose you to the unique cultural history of Hawai'i and show you how you can help protect these natural and cultural resources for the enjoyment of present and future generations.

Board a small group van and take a trip back in time while an interpretive guide narrates the history of Hilo. During your drive, you’ll see the historic bayfront and Queen Liliuokalani Gardens.
Travel into the gulch behind Honoli'i Beach Park, one of the island’s most popular surf breaks. Keep a lookout for the hidden waterfall that lies right beneath the road.
Take in views of world-famous Rainbow Falls and marvel at the mighty Wailuku River as water plunges down into the falls.
Continue your journey to soak in the views of Hilo’s world-famous Rainbow Falls. Watch as the water plunges down the Wailuku River to the towering 80’ waterfall and cascades over the rock cliffs and lava cave into the pool below. As you take in the jungle surroundings and peaceful settings, hopefully you can catch a glimpse of an “anu’u” or rainbow in the falls’ mist.
Leaving the falls, we'll break out our flashlights and drop down into the depths of Kaumana Cave, a lava tube that once served as a pipeline for volcanic lava to travel down the mountain.
As we return back into Hilo town we’ll make a tasty stop at Big Island Candies; known for their vast array of chocolate dipped confections and locally produced coffee. After an opportunity to sample and shop at their gift store, we’ll head to a local black sand beach often frequented by Hawaiian Green Seat Turtles.
Drive to Richardson's Beach for a stroll down a lovely black-sand cove that serves as a sanctuary for Hawaiian green sea turtles.
Return to the Hilo pier.
