All-Bahamian Leadership Team For Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point

Disney Cruise Line is set to open its new Lighthouse Point cruise port this summer. Joseph Gaskins Jr., the company's Regional Director of Public Affairs, announced that the port, officially known as Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, will have an all-Bahamian leadership team. The port is expected to welcome its first boat on June 7, and Disney is putting the finishing touches on the property, according to Gaskins.

Disney has been recruiting for the port for the past few months, and some of the senior staff have already been onboarded. Gaskins said that the full gamut of positions has been discussed, including recreation, security, safety, island services, office operations, payroll, maintenance, and human resources. "The initial amount we committed to was 150 well-paying jobs with benefits, but we are going to be exceeding that," he said. He added that every manager on the site will be Bahamian.

Disney has committed to providing health benefits to employees and implementing development and training programs, especially in hospitality-related disciplines. Gaskins also said that Disney would work with the LGM Maritime Academy to advance those interested in the maritime field.

When asked about employment opportunities on board Disney ships, Gaskins said that Disney is always on the lookout for new employees to work on its ships. He added that Disney has three new ships on order to add to its fleet. However, Bahamians have not traditionally taken advantage of on-ship job opportunities. "Cruise is spanning everywhere, and all these ships are flagged in The Bahamas," Gaskins said. "If we are not taking advantage of the opportunities, and if our partners and colleagues in the industry aren't helping to encourage that, then we are not giving Bahamians what they need to succeed."
